Electromagnetic Compatibility

Learn more about electromagnetic compatibility and how electromagnetic interference shielding works.

Electromagnetic Compatibility means nothing more than "an electronic or electrical product shall work as intended in its environment. The electronic or electrical product shall not generate electromagnetic disturbances, which may influence other products". In other words, EMC deals with problems of noise emission as well as noise immunity of electronic and electrical products and systems. Electromagnetic disturbances occur as conducted interference as well as radiated emissions and immunity problems.

It should be noted that the phrase EMC does not include the influence of electromagnetic waves (either desired or undesired) on biological systems. This is a much larger field and is covered by the expression "EMCE" ("E" is for environmental).

How does an Electromagnetic Interference Shielding Work?

EMC Filter Units are designed to protect the enclosure and its components by metalising all the plastic parts, connecting them together with an extra wire mesh, thus ensuring continuity between the filter kit and the cabinet. The EMC filter unit creates a continuous protection barrier as it meets the guaranteed electromagnetic barrier provided by the walls of the enclosure.

In terms of electrical enclosures, this reduces electromagnetic interference (EMI) both inwards and outwards, protecting the internal and external equipment.

Electromagnetic phenomena cause many disruptions amongst electronic equipment so it is important that devices are tested to ensure they are not emitting a large amount of electromagnetic interference (known as radiated and conducted emissions). Electronic and electrical products must meet the regulation limits on emissions generated. Electromagnetic immunity testing is also required in some areas and specific product types.
